The Book Act Award is presented to a work or achievement that brings an important perspective to today’s literary discussion and expands the definition of a beautiful book. The award recognises boldness, vision and the cultural significance of the book object.

The Finnish Book Art Committee has decided to present the Book Act of the year 2025 to the graphic designer and illustrator Pauliina Nykänen, whose work is emphasised by a strong sense of materiality, typographic sensitivity and a holistic vision of the book as an object.

Nykänen’s distinctive hand — represented in the 2025 collection by Sisaruuksia (Kustantamo S&S) and Kadoksiin (Siltala) — deepens the content of each book. Every decision, from the choice of paper to the binding and the rhythm of the illustrations, builds a coherent expression. Her illustrations are inventive, multidimensional and stylistically versatile.

The works designed by Nykänen radiate a particular magic of the book object. They are visually compelling and often realised with only minimal means, proving that outstanding book design does not require an abundance of materials or techniques.
